The Adventures of Thelma and Louise!! We are off on our great adventure!! Follow us as we explore several of our country’s great national parks!

The first park on our trip is beautiful Shenandoah in Virginia. The name Shenandoah is believed to be derived from a Native American language, probably Algonquin, meaning “beautiful daughter of the stars”. The name certainly suits this park. Nestled in the blue ridge mountains, this park is a shimmering gem. The quiet blue of the mountains provide a tranquil setting for any activity.

We chose a hike classified as moderately strenuous and described accurately as a 1- 2 hour hike – Dark Hollow Falls. It was lovely to travel along the stream until you reach the falls. The hike is rocky at some points and hiking boots are required to maintain even footing. The return hike is quite steep and strenuous. I enjoyed the hike. Although we did not bring our walking sticks, I wish we had, and I recommend them to support balance along the rocky terrain.

We stayed at Skyland and it was lovely. The food at Skyland’s restaurant was excellent. We had the rainbow trout… delicious. They have an outdoor eating area that overlooks the mountains and provides the perfect ambiance.

Driving along skyline drive; the main road through Shenandoah, there are many places to pull off and enjoy the breathtaking views. There are well marked trails to enjoy, as well as, picnic spots for lunch or a snack.

I hope that you add Shenandoah to your list of must see national Parks.
